Review: DLO iBoom JukeBox

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The core of iBoom JukeBox is a large but easily carried plastic and fabric speaker and docking unit that’s compatible with iPods, but not iPhones. Measuring just under 12 inches in width, 8 inches in depth, and 10 inches in height, the black and silver system somewhat recalls JBL’s iPod-exalting Radial speaker design, featuring a central iPod dock, fabric speakers arrayed around it pointing forwards, and an RF remote to let you control…

Review: Electronic Arts Tiger Woods PGA Tour

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The bullet point listing of Tiger Woods’ advantages over Let’s Golf is fairly simple: EA is offering seven different PGA courses with 126 holes versus Gameloft’s four courses and 63 holes; it also includes the likenesses of Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Annika Sorenstam, and Natalie Gulbis, plus a more sophisticated character customization system to let you make your own player. Though this system oddly opens with a skin…

News: iPhone app makers become acquisition targets

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The success of the App Store has lead several iPhone development houses, and their applications, to become targets for acquisition by larger companies. Following Amazon’s purchase of Lexcycle, maker of the iPhone book-reading application Stanza, IAC, an internet media company that also runs Citysearch, Ask.com, Match.com, and Evite, has announced its acquisition of UrbanSpoon, based in part on the strength and popularity of its iPhone and iPod…

News: WSJ: Ex-AMD exec Koduri joins Drebin at Apple

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Raja Koduri, CTO of the graphics product group at AMD, has left the company to take an unspecified position at Apple, according to a new report. Citing people familiar with Apple’s plans, the Wall Street Journal reports that Koduri started work this week, and will help the iPod maker design multifunction chips for use in the iPhone, iPod touch, and other yet-unannounced mobile devices. The report suggests the chips may offer drastic reductions…

Backstage: On Bringing TiVo to Needy iPod and iPhone Users (Including Us)

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

As mentioned on Backstage yesterday, we’re perturbed by buggy computer-dependent TV show recording solutions, and having used TiVo devices for years now—with reservations—we’ve been unwilling to buy into competing and inferior cable provider-rented DVRs. So we were interested in this smart, five-point post from Engadget’s Nilay Patel yesterday on fixing some long-standing problems with TiVo, particularly one section of…

First Looks: DLO JamJacket Game for iPod touch 2G

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Prior iPod touch and iPhone 3G “gamers’ cases” haven’t exactly lit the world on fire, but DLO’s approach with the iPod touch 2G-only JamJacket Game ($20) is somewhat smarter: rather than trying to make the slim device huge, the black silicone case adds comfortable rear grips and a wrist strap to the touch, covering its buttons and using a grippy, distinctive rear texture that does tend to pick up dust. We’re impressed by the way it feels, and the…

First Looks: DLO HybridShell for iPod touch 2G

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

As one of the most interesting DLO cases we’ve seen in a while, the new version of HybridShell for iPod touch 2G ($20) features a mostly clear hard plastic shell with black rubber accents. The interesting part is that the black rubber covers the iPod touch’s buttons, as well as the front chrome bezel, adding extra protection that comparably thin shells do not; a depressable rubber square on the back can be used to help remove the case from the device.…
